Poly served in France during World War I, where he saw action. His life was
saved by his canteen when a bullet ricocheted off of it, leaving a dent.
After service, Poly worked as a copper miner in Copper Hill, TN, and as a
rough carpenter. During the depression, he was employed by the Tennessee
Valley Authority, a New Deal rural electrification/flood control project,
helping build hydroelectric dams. Later, he worked in a shop making wooden
pallets.
Poly died October 07, 1978, and was buried in the Friendship Baptist Church
Cemetery in Suit, NC.
