John Moore

John Moore was born on January 04, 1826, in present-day Macon County, NC, to Abner Senter Moore and Ann Cook. On January 18, 1846, he married Catherine Watson (b. 10/04/1826 in Jackson Co., NC, d. 07/21/1899), daughter of George Watson and Frances Gribble. They were married by Esquire V. Clayborn in Cherokee County, NC. John and Catherine had ten children:

  1. Frances "Fanny" Elizabeth, born 04/06/1847; married David Mathis; died 03/10/1926, buried at Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery, Tennga, Murray Co., GA.
  2. Abner Senter II, born 10/17/1848; married Martha Cochran; died 09/07/1927, buried at Shed Cemetery, Ocoee, Polk Co., TN.
  3. Anna A., born 09/06/1850; married Emanuel Creasman; date of death unknown.
  4. Isaac Taylor, born 08/30/1852; married Margret Bennett; died 11/04/1889.
  5. Virgil Wilson, born 12/28/1854; married Harriet Campbell; died 03/12/1946, buried at Ocoee, Polk County, TN.
  6. John Ellen, born 09/16/1858; married Roxey Elizabeth; died 02/22/1924, buried at Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery, Tennga, Murray Co., GA.
  7. Martha Jane, born 02/19/1861; married Willis Smith Arthur; died 02/09/1946, buried at Hopewell Church Cemetery, Murray Co., GA.
  8. Leander T., born 05/03/1863; married Rose Campbell; died 12/12/1952, buried at Calhoun, Bradley Co., TN.
  9. Mary Catherine, birth date unknown; never married; died 03/1903.
  10. Ulyssis, birth date unknown; never married; date of death unknown, buried at Hopewell Church Cemetery, Murray Co., GA.

John was a veteran, having fought for the Union during the Civil War.

According to the census, John, Catherine, and the seven youngest children were living in the Fifth Civil District of Polk County, TN, in 1870. John farmed and Catherine kept house. John was also a Baptist minister. Records estimated the family's real estate value at $150, personal value at $225.

John Moore died on July 17, 1900. He and Catherine are buried at Hopewell Church Cemetery, Doogan, Murray County, GA.
