Thomas Covington Moore

T.C. was born June 16, 1862, in Clay County, NC, to Abner Jarrett Moore and Miriam Moore. T.C.'s paternal grandparents were Abner Senter Moore and Ann Cook, who settled in the Shooting Creek area of Clay County. T.C.'s maternal grandparents were John Covington Moore and Mary Bryson, the first white settlers in the area that is now Clay County.

T.C. married California Caldwell (b. 10/18/1866, d. 11/04/54) of Union County, GA, on February 16, 1881. Fifteen children were born of their union:

  1. Purley Agnew, born 12/17/1882; died 02/20/1891, buried in Baptist-Presbyterian Cemetery, Hayesville, NC.
  2. Abner Cleveland, born 11/17/1885; died 05/18/1887, buried in Baptist-Presbyterian Cemetery, Hayesville, NC.
  3. Harve McGinnis, born 02/04/1887; married Delta Mae Arthur (b. 06/30/1891, d. 05/21/80) of Murray County, GA on 01/09/10 in Benton, TN; died 09/14/73, buried in Baptist-Presbyterian Cemetery, Hayesville, NC.
  4. Eddie Covington, born 04/07/1888; married Fannie Johnson; died 02/11/63, buried in Sunset Cemetery, Murphy, NC.
  5. Robert Chambers, born 11/05/1889; married Gertrude Bryson; died 06/21/40, buried in Baptist-Presbyterian Cemetery, Hayesville, NC.
  6. William Thomas, born 03/16/1891; married first Mildred Martin, second, Amy Hooper; died 09/22/72, buried in Valley Town Cemetery, Andrews, NC.
  7. Charlie Spence, born 05/19/1893; married Carrie Hampton; died 04/28/53, buried in Baptist-Presbyterian Cemetery, Hayesville, NC.
  8. Dolly Mae, born 02/11/1895; married William Lowe; died 04/02/93, buried in Bessemer, AL.
  9. John Bunyan, born 01/21/1897; married Bessie Hensley; died 10/22/71, buried in Sunset Cemetery, Murphy, NC.
  10. Eliza Bell, born 10/25/1898; married first Claude Patterson, second, Charlie Gregory; died 03/11/76, buried in Union Hill Cemetery, Clay County, NC.
  11. Maymie Onelia, born 05/03/01; married first Paul Penland, second, Wiley Smith; died 06/03/92, buried in Baptist-Presbyterian Cemetery, Hayesville, NC.
  12. John Paul, born 05/31/03; married Zadie Imgram; died 01/25/98.
  13. Frank M., born 03/29/05; married Abey Buckner; date of death unknown.
  14. David, born 01/01/07; died 01/07/07, buried in Baptist-Presbyterian Cemetery, Hayesville, NC.
  15. Katherine, born 01/09/08; married Lige Shelton; died 10/30/80, buried in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

T.C. farmed the Tusquitee Valley in Clay County. He also served as the county's road commissioner and was elected Justice of the Peace for several terms before being appointed to a life term by the Governor. His memberships included the Odd Fellows Order and the Junior Order of United American Mechanics.

T.C. died at his home on September 21, 1938, and was buried in the Baptist-Presbyterian Cemetery in Hayesville, NC.
